Tibial plateau fracture
Was racing in the NASTAR National Championship, Platinum Division at Steamboat. I dislocated my shoulder pushing out of the start gate but decided to keep racing. Couldn't keep my balance, and wiped out on the course. Ended up with a tibial plateau fracture (bad) and tibial spine fracture. Occurred on 3/14/08. Had surgery on 3/27/08 with repair of the fractures with screws and sutures. Am told I will need to be non-weight bearing for 6 weeks, bummer. Am getting by with about 1-2 Percocet a day at this point (POD #4).

I'm so sorry to hear of your fracture. I had a long fall and had a level 5 tibia platue fracture, the worst you could have. The docs inserted a plate and 7 3.5 mm screws. I know it's frustrating but be patient. After a few weeks after surgury I was foolish and started walking around with crutches and taking a little to much risk. I had a fall and could feel the joint mis-align and catch when bending the knee. I wish I would have let the joint completely healed and take my time. You have the rest of my life, again be patient. I had surgury middle of june 2007. I'm at a platue point in the recovery process, I can't do any high impact sports (running, basketball, soccer etc) causing knee pain, also per doctors orders. I exersize on a bike or eliptical machine. It's taken along time to accept the seriousness of my fracture. I love basketball and wanted to get right back on the court. This is a life altering event. I'm not trying to be down or negative, only be patient with your knee. Let it recover and then don't push it to quickly, give it months, before pushing for 100%. Let it heal, do the excersizes per PT, and stretch it out. I had to rip the scare tissue all around the knee joint using a machine 4-6 months after surgury, very painful, but very glad I did it. I didn't want to be crippled the rest of my life. Don't be supprise if you hear pops as it rips, my doc says that it's normal and should hear that. I hope you won't have to do this too. I had to use Hydrocodon and advil to get thru it. Again, be patient and follow our doctors order and PT almost to the tee. Read other peoples accounts with their fractures. Good advice out there. This has been a very bitter pill to swallow, not being able to run again nor play soccer with my daughters. I'm also optomistic. The brain and heart says I'm young and knee is saying take it easy for a while. I know you really don't want to hear this right now, as neither did I right after surgury, whle reading other folks experiences. Right after the surgery, I was very very optimistic of a quick recovery, not really realizing the magnitude of the fracture, until I read hundreds of other accounts, which corresponded with what my docs been saying. My doc says I'll have a knee replacement in 15 years, hopefully not. I truely wish you the best, and from being patient, your'll have a better long-term recovery.
